Letter One – Imagine you are a mature age university student. You have two young children and also work 30 hours a week. The train journey is valuable time which can be used for studying and catching up on required reading. Write a letter arguing that use of mobile phones for conversations should be banned on public transport. Perhaps mobile phone use on trains should be for texting only.
Letter Two – Imagine you are a business person who commutes to the city each day from Geelong. Write a letter arguing that mobile phones use should be allowed on public transport.

Why do people insist on getting so easily annoyed by others using mobile phones on trains and buses? Don't get me wrong, I'm all for restricting their use in cinemas, theatres, quiet sporting events, when driving and in museums. But what is the problem with a passenger on a bus or train, or in a car using their phone? Are people really that irritable? It's no different than two people having a conversation in person. To all those who maintain that mobile phones are no louder than people having conversations on the train – NO! Not only do we have to tolerate loud piercing ring tones but the people using these phones seem to want to demonstrate that the person on the other end of the call could hear them without the phone. If you persist in using these monstrosities, be discreet about it. Turn down the ring tone and stop shouting. Alan, London. UK

Mobile call usage should be banned in some public places; notably, on trains, in restaurants, on buses, in cinemas, and in theatres, Mobile call usage should be banned whilst driving and anywhere near me. The inconsiderate and ubiquitous use of these devices is at best irritating and at worst anti-social or even dangerous. Why is it that people must spend their time talking interminable rubbish to people they have just seen, are just about to see or will see tomorrow! nyone who has caught a train around central Tokyo knows the biggest cultural taboo is to start yapping away on your mobile phone.
Vomiting salarymen on late night trains aside, Tokyo journeys are largely a silent experience.
It seems this cultural trend is spreading southward.
Queensland Rail has already introduced quiet zones on the first and last carriages of all trains. In Sydney, CityRail is considering following suit.
The New South Wales Transport Minister, Gladys Berejiklian, said she will definitely consider introducing quiet carriages on CityRail services.
If it follows the Queensland initiative, quiet zones would ban music and loud conversations — as well as mobile phone conversations. No fine would be issued for those not adhering to the ban.
Cynics might see the move as an attempt to divert political attention from Sydneys notoriously late, under-funded and unreliable train network.
But could it possibly work? Would youths stop drinking beer and holding spray-paint cans, and choose the eastern way to fulfillment? Are Sydneysiders that Zen?
Or is the search for serenity overstepping the mark when conversations are banned on trains?
